April 8, 2008

Team Southern Comfort XL is back with a new team for 2008.  We took 2nd in LBYC's Spring Invitational Regatta.  Then, in the April Fools Race hosted by our friends at Shoreline Yacht Club, Southern Comfort took first place in a 14.5 mile course in PHRF A, defeating the J-35 "Craic" and the Cat-38 "Bilbo Baggins" boat for boat - in fact, out of 9 boats including a trimiran, we were the first boat to finish, scratch!  The wind was shifty, but it built to a steady 8 to 10 knots, so with skillful sail-handling, great trimming and brilliant tactics, Southern Comfort was able to take a bullet for the race.

The next race on our schedule is the first Catalina Island Series hosted by LBYC.  See you on the starting line.

My name is Cole Price, and I am the skipper of Southern Comfort XL. The following individuals are the regulars on the SoCo XL Team:

Mike Price (Foredeck), Finley Miller (Pit), Skip Gill (Trim), Niko Kotsatos (Trim) and Bruce Alexander (Mast). Our buddies Buz Branch from Durango, Colorado and Shannon Hatch from Ventura join us when they're in town as well.

Southern Comfort XL, an Olson 30, sails out of Alamitos Bay located at the east (south) end of Long Beach Harbor in Southern California. We race throughout the Southern California region and down to Mexico for the Newport-to-Ensenada Race each year.

The original Southern Comfort, nicknamed SoCo, a Santa Cruz 27, was also sailed in the waters off Southern California for nine years, from Santa Barbara to San Diego and all the way to Ensenada, Mexico.

Early in 2002, the Olson 30 sailboat "Zippy" was purchased and campaigned for the balance of the racing season. In 2003 it was renamed Southern Comfort XL in tribute to the unbridled passion and genuine love of sailing that blessed me and my crew(s) in sailing the first SoCo.

Aboard for the 2006 Newport-to-Ensenada Race in which we took 2nd in class were Stewart Robertson, Paul Anctil, Jorge Suarez, Mike Price & Buz Branch.
